Lady Gaga isn’t playing around with her Joker: Folie à Deux performance. On Saturday, the actor was spotted filming in New York for Todd Phillips’ Joker sequel, which is the follow-up to Phillips’ 2019 Oscar-winning hit. The images, which provide the first look at Gaga in costume and full makeup for her role, appear to confirm that she is playing DC’s, Harley Quinn.
On February 14, Phillips posted an up-close photo of Gaga holding co-star Joaquin Phoenix’s face to Instagram, giving fans their first look at the singer in character. The director captioned the photo with “Happy Valentine’s Day” at the time.
In December, the director revealed production had begun by posting a picture of Phoenix in costume. The 2019 best actor Oscar winner returns as Arthur Fleck in the sequel, featuring a script by Phillips and Scott Silver.
The $1 billion-grossing Warner Bros. film Joker centered on Fleck, an aspiring comedian with mental health issues. The medical term for a mental illness affecting multiple family members is “Folie à Deux,” which is the inspiration for the sequel’s title.
First, Look At Lady Gaga As Harley Quinn From ‘Joker 2’ Reveals
Phillips’s Instagram post simply reads, “Happy Valentine’s Day.” This is the first photo the general public has seen of Gaga in the film. Lady Gaga also posted the photo on her own social media accounts.
According to rumors, Gaga will portray a version of Harley Quinn, a therapist who falls in love with the Joker and adopts his villainous persona. Both “Suicide Squad” and “Birds of Prey” starred Margot Robbie in the role of Harley Quinn. The voice of Harley Quinn in the ongoing HBO Max animated series is provided by Kaley Cuoco.
First Look At Lady Gaga As Harley Quinn In ‘Joker: Folie A Deux’
Nobody ever said that Valentine’s Day couldn’t be funny. On Instagram, Joker: Folie à Deux director Todd Phillips revealed the first photo of Lady Gaga in her upcoming role. On October 4, 2024, a sequel to the film The Joker will hit theaters.
The image also features Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck/Joker, who made a cameo appearance in the previous film. He’s all made up like a clown and relishing in the company of her persona. We currently have no information regarding the plot. At the conclusion of Joker, Arthur had complete control of the illustrious Gotham facility.
Gaga is undeniably talented as an actor and singer, and a fresh approach could be exactly what this sequel needs.
Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin), Catherine Keener (Being John Malkovich), Jacob Lofland (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials), and Harry Lawtey (Atonement) will all appear alongside Gaga in the follow-up (Industry).
Only Zazie Beetz (Atlanta) has been confirmed to return to her role as Arthur’s “love interest,” Sophie, and she’ll be joined by Phoenix. Director and co-writer Phillips is back, this time collaborating with Scott Silver. Oscar-winning composer Hildur Gunadóttir is also reprising her role from the first film.
Robbie told MTV News in October 2022, “It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning, all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, the way like Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor.
Robbie continued, “It’s such an honor to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get a try at playing,” she said. I have faith that she will take that opportunity and run with it.
