Officials have stated that there is no danger to the public from the big fire started by derailed railroad cars in a community in central Maine on Saturday.
The lumber and wiring on the derailed freight cars, according to officials. A representative for the Canadian Pacific Kansas City rail network indicated that other carts carrying hazardous items were unharmed by the derailment and fire. A washout of ice and debris on the tracks was blamed by authorities as the main cause of the crash.
The Rockwood Fire and Rescue Department said that the derailment occurred north of the town of Rockwood in Somerset County, which is located on the shores of the state’s largest freshwater lake, Moosehead Lake.
After evaluating the derailment, officials concluded that “hazardous materials are not at risk of leaking and are not at risk of catching fire,” according to a statement released by Jim Britt, a spokesman for the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry.
On Saturday It Remained Unclear Who Was Operating The Train For The Freight Company
The Maine Forest Service speculates that a buildup of melting ice and debris that washed out part of the railroad track was to blame for the incident.
The Maine Forest Service reports a small forest fire was started when three locomotives and six rail cars derailed while hauling lumber and electrical wiring. The fire has been confined, and it is currently being watched by local emergency personnel, the service reported.

Upon being briefed on the train derailment, Maine Governor Janet Mills tweeted that her office “will continue to closely monitor the situation” and that there was “no threat to public health or safety.”
