Will We See The Return Of The Main Trio In The ‘Harry Potter And The Cursed Child’ Film?

To adapt the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child for the big screen, Warner Bros. wants to bring back the original cast members, including Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson.Deathly Hallows: Part 2 was the eighth and final Harry Potter film, and it’s been 12 years since it was released.

Warner Bros. has since released three of J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts prequels, the first of what was originally planned to be five films in the spin-off series. After Secrets of Dumbledore’s disappointing performance at the box office last year, the studio is clearly rethinking whether or not to continue the franchise.

However, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, discussed the success of the Harry Potter films and the studio’s future emphasis on franchises in an earnings call last November.

A month later, a trusted leaker named WDW Pro tweeted that the studio has plans to remake the original film franchise with a new cast sometime in the next three to five years.

Warner Bros. Has Shown Interest In Filming “Harry Potter And The Cursed Child”

We found out that we weren’t the first to wonder about that. It has been reported by Puck that after Harry Potter and the Cursed Child premiered on stage in 2016, Warner Bros. considered this very question. Studios reportedly wanted to adapt The Cursed Child into two films, but Rowling and her representatives were not interested.

Neither were stage producers Sonia Friedman or Colin Callender. They reasoned that if they made a movie version of The Cursed Child, it might affect how well the play does in its current Broadway run. A play’s life cycle is significantly longer than that of a film or television series;

Furthermore, not all Warner Bros. executives were enthusiastic about adapting The Cursed Child for the big screen, as doing so would have been tantamount to admitting that the Fantastic Beasts series was doomed to failure. Now that three films have been released in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, it appears that this has indeed been the case, with each new installment earning significantly less money than its predecessors.

Chris Columbus has expressed interest in directing a film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, but beyond that, there has been no word on whether or not Warner Bros. will actually produce the film. To date, there has been no confirmation of a release date, any casting announcements, or a trailer for a Harry Potter film adaptation.

Latest Movie Updates On Harry Potter And The Cursed Child

Chris Columbus, the film’s director, first expressed interest in adapting Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in a 2021 interview (via Variety). The interview was part of a commemorative project marking 20 years since the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Christopher Columbus made the following assertion “I’d give anything to be the director of “The Cursed Child.” This is a fantastic play, and the cast members couldn’t be more appropriately young for their parts. I like to imagine things like this every once in a while.”

While it’s possible that Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint are already at the right age to play their adult counterparts in the Harry Potter films, the fate of this Chris Columbus fantasy rests on whether or not the original cast members are interested in coming back. Without the original actors,

a movie adaptation of The Cursed Child would feel hollow and incomplete, and it’s unlikely that Warner Bros. would greenlight production. Having said that, the plan to create a sequel to HP is not a bad one. Many people liked the Harry Potter books/movies/etc. missed out on seeing the play. Preorders for The Cursed Child may do exceptionally well.

There are a lot of moving parts, and it will be even more challenging for Warner Bros. to make a new Harry Potter film if they want to reunite the original three actors. Since the controversies surrounding J.K. Rowling surfaced, Harry Potter and Hermione Granger actors Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson have distanced themselves from their roles.

Meanwhile, there’s not much for Potter fans to get excited about. Hogwarts Legacy, the best-selling adaptation to date, has received rave reviews. This isn’t quite as exciting as watching The Chosen One take on Voldemort, but it’s still pretty good. Depending on how well Hogwarts Legacy does when it launches later this year on all of its intended platforms, it may get a downloadable content pack.
